Note

From 432 to 446 Hz. The standard is 440.

Note: A4

Frequency440.00 Hz
MIDI number69
Period2.273 ms
Wavelength0.780 m

At 20 °C, speed of sound 343 m/s.

A two-second sine wave, with a soft attack and release.

C4 = middle C = MIDI 60 (scientific pitch notation; Roland and some synths call it C3).

How it works

  1. Pick the note on the keyboard and the octave.
  2. Move the reference if you are not working at 440 Hz.
  3. Press Listen to hear it, or copy the value you need.

Why it exists

To tune a filter to the fundamental, to know where to cut without guessing, to check whether a sample is flat, or simply to know how many metres long the wave is that you are trying to fit into a room.

About octave numbering

Here C4 is middle C, MIDI number 60: that is scientific pitch notation, the same convention used by almost every piece of music software.

Roland, and the synthesisers that follow its numbering, call the same note C3. If the numbers do not line up with your instrument, that is almost certainly the gap: a whole octave, not an arithmetic error.

About the audio

Sound only plays when you ask for it. It is a two-second sine wave with a soft attack and release, generated by the browser: no file is downloaded.
