An accidental does not move the note: it changes the pitch, not the line. On the third level you answer with the letter as on the other two — what changes is that there is a sign in front, and that is where the line gets misread.

No key signatures, no rhythms, no sound: you read the position and say the note. The score lives in the page and goes away on reload.

How it works

  1. Choose the level and the clefs you want to drill.
  2. Look at the note and press the right letter, with the mouse or with keys 1 to 7.
  3. After a moment the next one arrives.
  4. Below you get right answers, accuracy, streak and average time.

What it does

It shows you a note on the stave and asks which one it is. You answer by clicking the name or pressing a key from 1 to 7. After the answer the next one comes, and below are the numbers of the session: how many you got, the percentage, the current streak, the best one and how long you take on average.

It is for building speed. Reading a note is something you learn by recognising it, not by counting lines, and the only way there is to see a lot of them.

The three levels

Lines and spaces stays inside the stave: five lines and four spaces, nine positions.

With ledger lines adds three positions above and three below, which is enough to include middle C in both clefs — the first note anyone learns, and the only one that sits on a ledger line in treble and in bass alike.

With accidentals puts a sharp or a flat in front of the note.

An accidental does not move the note

On the third level you answer with the letter as on the other two. An accidental changes the pitch, not the line: an F sharp sits on the same line as F. What changes is that there is a sign in front of the head, and that is exactly where the line gets misread when you are starting.

That is why there are seven keys and not twelve: the question is where the note sits, not how it sounds.

The two clefs

Treble and bass, on together or one at a time. At least one always stays on: with both off there would be nothing to read.

If you keep both on, the clef changes from one question to the next — which is what a keyboard player needs, reading two staves at once.

It works without seeing the screen

The stave carries a label that says where the note is — «line 3», «space 2», «ledger line 1 below» — and never which note it is. A screen reader announces the position, and the exercise stays the same: getting from there to the letter is the task itself.

A label saying «E4» would have given the answer away.

What is not here

No key signatures, no rhythms, no sound. No C clefs. The score lives in the page: on reload you start from zero, and that is deliberate — a session’s streak ends with the session.
