The average is over the last eight taps. After two seconds of silence the next tap starts a fresh series, instead of being read as a very slow tempo.
The beat is taken when you press, not when you let go: release latency is not constant and would end up inside every interval.
Because the tempo of a track you are listening to is not written down anywhere. You know it by tapping it, and somebody else has to do the arithmetic while you keep time — which is why every DAW has a tap button, and why nobody uses one from a browser, where you actually need it: while listening to something that is not open in your session.
The delay calculator already has a tap, but there it fills a field and disappears into a table. Here the tempo is the result, so there is room to say how steady it is.
The average is over the last eight taps, not over all of them. That window is what absorbs an uncertain start: after eight beats the first two taps — the ones where you were still finding the track — have dropped out of the count on their own.
Below it are the slowest and the fastest, and they are there to let you read the average. Two series can have exactly the same mean tempo with one steady and the other lopsided: the average cannot tell them apart, the distance between minimum and maximum can. If those two numbers sit far apart, the track is not speeding up. You are.
Someone tapping 119.7 almost always wants 120. Someone tapping 137.2 wants 137, not 135: a tempo is not round just because it ends in five. So the suggestion offers the nearest multiple of five only when it falls within one beat, and otherwise says nothing — and when it says nothing, the whole number to copy is already the big one.
The beat is taken when you press, not when you let go. It sounds like a quibble and it is not: an HTML button activates with the space bar on release, and the time between pressing and releasing is not constant — it changes with tiredness, with hurry, with the key. Being inconsistent, it does not cancel out in the average: it would land as jitter inside every interval, which is exactly the number this page exists to measure.
